Salzwelten Destination Guide
museum's fatigue was yesterday

Following several months of conception, development and content creation, we can proudly present the Salzwelten Destination Guide. – an app full of discoveries, adventure & innovation!

The Salzwelten Destination Guide serves as tool for visitors. It informs and entertains before, during and after a visit to one of the three locations of Salzwelten GmbH. The app is a fully functional audio guide. Furthermore, an intuitive 3D-model of all sites supports orientation. It offers additional information for the various locations and analogue objects. So far, we developed the destination guide for the Salzburg site, the Dürrnberg. Visitors learn everything about salt mining there, which has lasted for thousands of years. People coming to Dürrnberg are told the unique success story of salt, of brilliant inventions and technological disruptions. Above ground, visitors can stroll through a fully replicated Celtic village. The hardship of life 2500 years ago is presented on the original site. To discover all corners of the village, we created a digitally assisted scavenger hunt. You will meet two original young celts there, Tam and Salia, who provide you with some tasks. Below ground,  a real guide and our destination guide will lead you through a system of tunnels. Every tunnel and chamber awaits you with another surprise and episode of history. For the little ones, there is a special tour guided by Sally the duck.

01
Concept

After a hard competition facing a variety of other though competitors, we were one of the agencies chosen to reinvent and restyle the Salzwelten Salzburg. Once entrusted with the challenge, we started the project by searching for a strong narrative.

Following that narrative we can develop formats for any media format. For the Salzwelten, one major task was to develop a destination guide, including audio guide, gaming elements and info pages featuring topics around salt and the celts.

02
DESIGN PHASE

Thanks to our technical equipment, we can capture objects or people in high quality. The creation of 3D content opens the field for high quality content, integrated in the app. For example, various celtic objects are on display inrichly detail.

We like to test the limits of our own creativity. For Salzwelten Salzburg, we created a universe of its own. The best way to check it out? Download the app and visit the place!

CONTENT CREATION

How to bring celtic characters to life? We brought a real family to our studio, all dressed up as celts and invited them to our photoscan rig.

Besides, we drafted the main characters. Based on the drafts we then developed comic characters that would fit the plot of the quests that are embedded in the destination guide

04
DEVELOPMENT

After our celts were prepared to enter the stage, we integrated them into the app. The first time they appear is in the intro of the app, later you will meet them in the info pages and quests.

Today, we are proud to announce that the app has download numbers in the five-digit range.

The idea of an integrative destination guide app seems to flourish. Obviously, visitors appreciate the all in one solution. Even the technically more advanced quests are completed by the thousands.

MAKING-OF

Following long test intervals and on site walk-throuhgs, we are proud to announce that the app works both above ground and below ground. Our celtic image targets contribute to the aura of the celtic village.

Besides testing on-site we had several iteration loops testing the app and especially the quests in our studio. After all, the procedure of scanning image targets in a special order requires a functioning system.

How AR/VR might be able to help museums and zoos?
These disruptive technologies hold the potential of protecting zoos and aquariums from ever-growing competition. We think they definitely are the golden opportunity to reconnect with the young generation who no longer visit these spaces. It’s time to build a whole new way to exhibit - one the whole family can enjoy the unique engagement they get from this special immersive experiences.
